ALL ABOUT VITAMIN C!

Vitamin C is one of the most known and named vitamins, but do you know all the benefits it can bring to your life? Did you know that it is associated with our mood, and that it is essential for development and growth? Today, in our blog we inform you about the infinite benefits associated with the intake of this supplement.

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is one of the 13 essential vitamins for our body. It is a water-soluble vitamin, so it is easy to eliminate but must be taken daily, as the body does not store it. And it can only be obtained through food or food supplements.

What are the benefits?

It is associated with a long list of health benefits. It not only helps to cure colds, but also to repair tissues of our body, through the formation of collagen and accelerating the healing process of wounds, injuries and burns. In the same way, it favors the production of Carnitine, converting our fat into energy, and of catecholamines, a set of fundamental neurotransmitters in processes such as emotion, learning or memory. It is a great antioxidant, and prevents the damage of free radicals, the main cause of the aging of our tissues and the harmful effects of tobacco. It also prevents certain heart diseases, as well as degenerative diseases such as arteriosclerosis or dementia. It decreases the incidence of blood clots, helps in joint movements, and improves our mood, since a deficit of this vitamin makes us feel fatigued or discouraged. It also strengthens the immune system as it increases the presence of cytokine in the blood, a powerful antiviral.

Where can we find it?

Vitamin C is present in a wide variety of foods, but the major sources are fruits and vegetables. In fruits, we can find it in kiwis, mangoes, pomegranates, lemons, watermelon, melon and of course oranges. In vegetables, yellow peppers contain the most of this vitamin, followed by red peppers, cabbage, dried tomatoes and broccoli.

How much Vitamin C do we need?

The recommended daily amount is 80mg, but may vary according to age, sex and habits:

- Up to 6 months: 40 mg.

- From 7 to 12 months: 50 mg.

- From 1 to 3 years: 15 mg.

- From 4 to 8 years old: 25 mg.

- From 9 to 13 years old: 45 mg.

- Girls from 14 to 18 years old: 65 mg.

- Children from 14 to 18 years old: 75 mg.

- Men over 18 years of age: 90 mg.

- Men over 18 years of age: 90 mg.

- Women over 18 years of age: 75 mg.

It is recommended that smokers add 35 mg more, as tobacco smoke increases the amount of vitamin C needed. It is also recommended a higher dose in pregnant women, people with diets poor in certain foods or when suffering from certain diseases.

Our daily life, stress and other causes can make it not always possible to consume these foods, that is why we have the help of supplements that will give us that vitamin intake we need in our day to day.
